Note:
Great Bridge Crew (GBC) has grown to a team of approximately
45 rowers. Our men’s and women’s varsity teams are stronger
than ever, consistently winning the Hampton Roads Regional
Championship. State Championship crew includes men’s
lightweight eight, women’s lightweight four, men’s double.
Four GBC crews placed top six in the last four years at
nationals against other public and private high schools.
Additionally, at the national level, our team has placed
boats among the top 10 at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in
Philadelphia.
This is a far cry from our humble beginnings when, in
January of 1999, a core group of 20 students came together
to form the Crew Club at Great Bridge High School (GBHS).
Many GBC rowers go on to row at the collegiate level, some
on athletic scholarships. GBC alums are currently rowing in
all three NCAA athletic divisions.
What is Crew?
Crew is a sport where athletes row in a shell (boat) with
four or eight rowers. They race against other boats on a
river, over a 1,500 meter course. The sport of crew is
teamwork at its finest. There are no individual “superstars”
in crew, just selfless, motivated, and dedicated kids who
understand teamwork. It is a sport that requires stamina
and perseverance to succeed.
Great Bridge Crew is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization.
Since the sport of crew is unfunded by the City of
Chesapeake School System , the team must fund its
existence. We have an annual operating budget in excess of
$85,000. This does not include the cost for new boats and
equipment. We appreciate your support to maintain our boats
so our rowers are competitive and safe on the water.
